Why He LEFT The Netherlands For A Life In Spain (Dutch Living Abroad)
For many, living in the Netherlands would be a dream, but for some Dutch people, moving out of the country is a goal. I met one of these people, Tristan, during a trip I made to Spain last summer. So I decided to come back in order to learn more about his story living in Spain, culture differences he's encountered, and his life as an entrepreneur.
You can find more on Tristan's wine tasting company here: sommeliertristan.com/?gclid=CjwKCAjwuJ2xBhA3EiwAMVjkVK3r5V0vawwBDjJ8Cadomc3saKqElxZaBlWDalcvNGe9xMO5tD42rRoC3DYQAvD_BwE

'Doe normaal' stems from Calvinist values. After the renaissance, the protestant churches were a big influence on Dutch culture, the same as the the puritin movement in the US shaped a lot of US culture. Vanity, pride as well as lazyness were frowned upon, although the value 'love thy neighbour' should have been their main guide, a lot of people were afraid of what other would think or say of them. People also being jealous of others talents and successes, as soon as someone successful falls, especially if they are boastful, their surrounding community would often secretly enjoy this, joke about it. This still happens today when famous people fall from grace. This we call leedvermaak or schadenfreude in German, the joy of others misery. A nasty remainder of small-minded religious influence in small communities. The 'cold war' called verzuiling (the breaking up of the population in religious and political views, noticeable in the different radio, tv stations and different religious sportsclubs) is something that only broke up during the advent of the internet, which enabled people to talk to people outside their 'zuil' (pillar, or same religious and social community).

In most elementary schools, the kids level is assessed over their entire school period (i.e. the full 8 yrs). I think the fact the secondary school is differentiated by level is a good thing. You are not choosing the type of job you pursue at that time, only the level is determined based on ones capabilities. As pointed out by others if you are a " late bloomer" you can still climb up the ladder to get the higher levels of secondary school that open te route to enter university. Besides, even when you go to college (HBO) you can still do a masters at a university afterwards. If I look at myself and my own children, it has helped to attend secondary school at the appropriate level.

When I was in the NL the word that I remember: "Regel is regel". In many countries people bend the rules little bit For example if you come 6:00pm and the shop is closing, the person closing it my let you in; but in the NL you the person will tell you, the time of closing is now, so sorry! the rule is the rule (In Dutch: regel is regel). That is not a bad thing by the way - it is a culture which usually leads to dependability.
